October 1 – National Day of China

China’s National Day (Simplified Chinese: 国庆节; Traditional Chinese: 國慶節; Pinyin: Guóqìng Jié) is celebrated annually on October 1. It is a public holiday in the People’s Republic of China, commemorating the founding of the nation.

National Day is celebrated across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, featuring numerous government-organized events, including fireworks displays and concerts. Public spaces, such as Tiananmen Square in Beijing, are decorated with festive themes and images of respected leaders, such as Mao Zedong. Fireworks are displayed in cities nationwide, including Hong Kong, where evening fireworks over Victoria Harbour have been held annually since 1997. Numerous parades take place in Beijing, some of which are very large-scale.

The People’s Republic of China was officially founded on October 1, 1949, during a ceremony at Tiananmen Square. On October 2, 1949, the Central People’s Government passed a resolution declaring October 1 of every year as National Day of China.
