การเรียนรู้ผ่านกิจกรรม (Activity-based Learning) ในการยึดหลักการให้ผู้เรียนสร้างองค์ความรู้ด้วยตนเอง “Child Centered” การเรียนโดยการปฏิบัติจริง และปฏิบัติเพื่อให้เกิดการเรียนรู้และแก้ปัญหาได้ Doing by Learning จึงถูกนำมาใช้อย่างจริงจังในการปฏิรูปการศึกษาของไทย การเรียนรู้ชนิดนี้สามารถอธิบายให้เข้าใจง่ายคือ “สอนแต่น้อย ให้เรียนมาก ๆ” การเรียนแบบ Learning by Doing นั้นใช้ “กิจกรรม” เป็นหลักในการเรียนการสอน โดยการ “ปฏิบัติจริง” ในเนื้อหาทุกขั้นตอนของการเรียนรู้ เป็นการเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเอง ทุกคนในกลุ่มเป็นผู้ปฏิบัติ คุณครูเป็นพี่เลี้ยงและเทรนเนอร์ แต่กิจกรรมที่นำมาใช้นี้ต้องมีประสิทธิภาพในการเรียนรู้เนื้อหานั้น ๆ มีจุดมุ่งหมาย สนุก และน่าสนใจ ไม่ซ้ำซากจนก่อให้เกิดความเบื่อหน่าย ดังนั้น คุณครูจึงเป็น “นักออกแบบกิจกรรม” มืออาชีพ ที่สามารถ “มองเห็นภาพกิจกรรม” ได้ทันที
